Azkals, Palami Win PSA Major Awards

MANILA, Philippines – A week before their AFC Challenge Cup match, the Philippine Azkals football team bagged the Presidential Achievement Award given by the prestigious Philippine Sports Writers Association (PSA) at the Manila Hotel.

Azkals' manager Dan Palami bagged the "Sports Executive of the Year" award.

The following sportsmen were also proclaimed "Athletes of the Year":

    * Francisco "Djangco" Bustamante and Dennis Orcollo for pool;
    * Rey Saluldar for Boxing; and
    * Biboy Rivera for bowling.

The "Lifetime Achievement" award was given to Coach Virgilio "Baby" Dalupan and veteran referee Carlos Padilla.

The PSA event was graced by boxing superstar and lawmaker Manny Pacquiao, who later sent his regards to the Azkals.

"Good luck sa Azkals team... Sana manalo kayo at marami pang mga panalo ang gagawin ninyo," he said.

Azkals fly to Japan

The Azkals are now on their way to Japan, where they will train until March 13 before heading to Ulan Bator, Mongolia.

The players expressed confidence in bringing home the bacon, after clinching a 2-0 home win in Bacolod City.

For the native players, the cold climate in Mongolia—reportedly dropping down at most to negative 10 degrees Celsius— will be their greatest threat.

For foreigners Phil and James Younghusband, however, the freezing conditions will be no problem.

"Every game is the same to me, whether it's in the heat, or in the cold," Phil said.

Meanwhile, it was also confirmed that Filipino-British Neil Etheridge will not be playing as the goalkeeper for the Mongolia game.

He will be reportedly replaced by Eduard Sacapaño. – Report from Dyan Castillejo, ABS-CBN News

I will support Azkals as always! Go pinoy.
