UST tops men’s volley; DLSU prevails

MANILA---After claiming the UAAP overall championship, University of Santo Tomas added a cherry to its campaign in the 73rd season of the most prestigious varsity league in the country by annexing the men’s volleyball crown yesterday at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Growling Tigers ground out a hard fought 29-27, 26-24, 25-23, Game 2 triumph over the Far Eastern U Tamaraws to clinch their fourth straight crown and their 19th overall in men’s volleyball.

But it was a bittersweet affair for the school celebrating its 400th year.

La Salle dethroned the Tigresses in the women’s championship later with a  25-18, 25-17, 28-26 Game 2 victory.

The Lady Archers, learning from their Game 1 meltdown, never gave the Tigresses a chance this time.

After the Tigresses nailed set point in the third frame, the Lady Archers clawed back from 19-24 down to claim their sixth women’s crown overall.

“It was the spirit of the players that pulled them through,” said La Salle head coach Ramil De Jesus in Filipino. “It’s hard for one team to really come back from a 19-24 deficit.”

Skipper Cha Cruz, named finals MVP, took charge for La Salle once again and finished with a game high 14 points along with best blocker Michelle Gumabao.

Season MVP Jacqueline Alarca, playing her final year of eligibility, contributed 11 markers.

Jayson Ramos, who was adjudged finals MVP in the men’s side, fired  11 points for UST, including the match-clinching ace that rocked the entire building.

Ramos was at the forefront of a balanced attack by the Tigers, who had three other yellow shirt scoring in double figures.

Season MVP John Paul Torres and skipper Henry James Pecana added 10 points apiece while Jayson Salvador Depante added 11 more.
