PBA: Gin Kings stun Bolts as Commissioner's Cup starts

MANILA, Philippines – Hardworking import Nate Brumfield led Barangay Ginebra past the Meralco Bolts on Friday’s PBA Commissioner’s Cup opener at the jampacked Ilocos Norte Centennial Arena.

According to PBA.ph, Brumfield finished with a near triple double performance for the Gin Kings’ 115-98 beating of the Bolts.

“It’s good na nakauna, this being a very short [elimination] round,” said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico.
Brumfield scored 32 points on a 10-of-18 field shooting. He also hauled down 11 rebounds aside from dishing out 8 assists.

The import also got plenty of help from team mates Mark Caguioa, who tallied 20 points, and Willie Miller and Ronald Tubid, who combined for 31.

Rudy Hatfield grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds despite only scoring 6 points.

“Mabuti rin na ang locals got adjusted relatively quickly to Nate’s style of play,” Uichico said. “Of course, we have yet to see the other imports and he may not be as explosive or as flashy as the others, but he makes the team better.”

Meralco’s import Tony Dandrige drained 30 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Asi Taulava also provided the Bolts the needed backstop with 23 points and 10 rebounds.

However, scorer Mark Cardona was a non-factor as he was limited to just 6 points.

Big men Marlou Aquino and Reynel Hugnatan did not see action for the Bolts.
